The sounds we carry home

Music is often the first thing to travel and the last thing to be lost. It tells people where they are from before they say a word.

For many families a particular song marks the start of a weekend, a celebration or a long drive. The title may be forgotten but the feeling is exact.

Music moves easily because it needs very little: a voice, a phone, a speaker in a small kitchen. It crosses borders without paperwork and arrives intact enough to be recognised.

Once it has arrived, it starts to change. New listeners, new instruments and new languages find their way in, and the sound becomes something that belongs to more than one place.

Old songs, new rooms

That is not dilution. It is how every living tradition behaves. The question worth asking is not whether a sound is pure but whether it still means something to the people who play it.

You can leave a place without leaving its sound.
