Friendship, family and ambition

Ambition is often described as a solo act. For most of us it is a group project, with family and friends carrying more of the weight than we admit.

The usual story of ambition has one protagonist. Someone has a goal, works hard, and arrives. The people around them appear briefly as supporting cast.

Real life is messier and kinder. A friend reads the application at midnight. A parent asks the right question at the wrong time. A sibling covers for an absence. A group chat becomes a quiet board of advisers.

These contributions are rarely recorded, partly because they are hard to measure and partly because they are what we expect of the people we love.

Saying thank you properly

It can also run the other way. Ambition changes the balance of a relationship, and not always comfortably. Someone who has moved up may find that the old jokes land differently.

Nobody gets ahead alone. Some of us just forget to say who helped.

Elikia Editorial

The healthiest relationships make room for both: pride in each other’s progress, and honesty about what it costs.
