The room where decisions are made

Every organisation has a room where the real decisions happen. Who gets in, and who is listened to once inside, shapes everything that follows.

The room may be a boardroom, a Friday call, or a corner of the office where three people talk before the meeting begins. Wherever it is, it sets the direction.

For people who have spent a career being the only one of their kind in such rooms, the experience is familiar. You are present but not quite included. Your point is noted but not quite taken up.

Attention to who speaks, who is interrupted and whose ideas are repeated by someone else is a simple, practical way to see how a room really works.

Changing the room

Some people change it from the inside by asking better questions. Some build new rooms. Both are legitimate, and both take stamina.

Being invited is the start. Being heard is the point.

Elikia Editorial

What matters is that the people making decisions look more like the people living with them.
