The joinery workshops of the Ashanti region operate on a timescale that makes modern furniture production look frantic. Timber is selected years before it is cut, seasoned in open air, and worked with tools whose geometry has not meaningfully changed in a century. The output is slow, expensive, and increasingly sought after.
Reading the Log
Selection is where the craft is decided. A master reads grain direction, checks for tension wood, and predicts how a board will move over decades in a specific humidity. Get this wrong and no amount of subsequent skill recovers the piece.
This knowledge is entirely empirical and largely unwritten. It is acquired by being wrong repeatedly under supervision, which is why apprenticeships run for years rather than months.

Joints That Assume Movement
Traditional joinery here is designed around the certainty that wood will move. Frame-and-panel construction, unglued floating panels, and draw-bored mortises all permit seasonal expansion without splitting.
Contemporary flat-pack construction takes the opposite approach, using engineered sheet goods that do not move and do not last. The comparison is unflattering in one direction and economically decisive in the other.
Succession
The workshops’ central anxiety is not competition but continuity. Apprenticeship requires a young person to accept several low-earning years in exchange for a skill whose market is uncertain, and fewer are willing.
Some workshops have adapted by taking commissions from architects and galleries, which pays better and, crucially, provides work interesting enough to retain apprentices through the difficult middle years.
What these makers hold is not a style but a relationship with a material that behaves unpredictably over long periods—knowledge that becomes considerably harder to reconstruct once the last person who learned it by hand has stopped working.
